The God who hides

Sometimes heaven opens and we get a glimpse of wonders beyond.

Revelation 10New International Version (NIV)

The Angel and the Little Scroll

10 Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven. He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head; his face was like the sun, and his legs were like fiery pillars. He was holding a little scroll, which lay open in his hand. He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion. When he shouted, the voices of the seven thunders spoke. And when the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven say, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it down.

...the disciples came and asked Jesus, “Why do you speak to the crowds in parables?” And he answered them, “It's good pedagogy; a story from their own experience will help them remember the lesson while illustrating and illuminating a deeper truth” ...

not really  ;)

...

"This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand."
Sometimes we glimpse wonders but it seems to be the normal case that truth is hard to find and that, if God exists, he takes pleasure in hiding Himself. If there is hope that He can be known at all it is the hope that He rewards earnest seekers.
It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.

On the 6th June 2012 i got up at about 4:30am to watch the dawn from the bridge at Willesden Junction to try and catch a glimpse of a heavenly syzygy that won't happen again till 10th December 2117.

What I saw (and recorded - see video above) that morning has become a powerful metaphor for me of the nature of ultimate reality and our perception of it. It is only through the occlusion of our terrestrial circumstances that our present form can even bear to look at the glory beyond.
Some day, above the firmament, with new eyes that are built to gaze on our creator we may perceive reality as it is. Till then glimpses through the clouds and earnest seeking are the best preparation we have.

It is tempting for a believer to want a knock down argument for the existence of God, sometimes for no other reason than that the feeling of being right is intoxicating.

It is a mercy that the finding is not in the arguing.
He who seeks...

Isaiah 45:15  Revised Standard Version (RSV)

Truly, thou art a God who hidest thyself,
O God of Israel, the Savior.

And without faith it is impossible to please him. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
